What is the YTM Primer?

YTM Primer is a liquid butyl rubber adhesive used with YTM corrosion protection tapes on buried and submerged pipes, fittings and metallic installations with operating temperatures up to 70 °C.

Applied by brush or roller on the prepared steel, it smooths surface irregularities and creates a strong bond between the tape adhesive and the substrate. It complies with EN 12068 Class C50 when used with the YTM 3-Ply Tape Coating System.

Key features and benefits

  • Butyl rubber based adhesive
  • Fast drying – 5 to 10 min at 23 °C
  • Ensures tape bond to steel
  • Smooths surface irregularities
  • Coverage approx. 8 m² per litre
  • Shelf life 3 years

Applications

  • Primer for the YTM 2-Ply Tape Coating Systems (AWWA C214, BGD-KG, standard grades)
  • Primer for the YTM 3-Ply Tape Coating System EN 12068 C50
  • Under YTM Butyl Rubber Mastic at welds and fittings
  • Steel, ductile iron and concrete substrates

Storage and safety

  • Store in closed original cans at −15 to +50 °C, away from heat and direct sunlight.
  • Highly flammable (flash point 5 °C) – no open flames, sparks or smoking; ensure good ventilation.
  • Wear gloves and eye protection; avoid inhaling vapours.
  • Read the Safety Data Sheet before use; keep cans closed when not in use.

Surface preparation

  • Remove rust, dirt, weld spatter, oil and grease; the surface must be clean and dry.
  • Prepare steel to St 2 by wire brush or Sa 2 – Sa 2½ by blast cleaning (ISO 8501-1).

How to apply

  1. CleanWire-brush off rust, dirt and weld spatter; remove oil, grease or test gel with a solvent such as white spirit.
  2. PreparePrepare steel to St 2 by wire brush or Sa 2 – Sa 2½ by blast cleaning (ISO 8501-1).
  3. PrimeApply uniformly by brush or roller within 8 hours of preparation, avoiding dots, spots and other defects.
  4. WrapWhen touch-dry but still tacky (typically 5–10 min), apply the YTM inner tape.

Frequently asked questions

How long should the primer dry before taping?

Typically 5–10 minutes at 23 °C. Apply the inner tape while the primer is touch-dry but still tacky.

How much primer do I need?

About 8 m² per litre – e.g. roughly 0,45 L per 10 m of DN 100 pipe or 1,27 L per 10 m of DN 300 pipe.

How soon after surface preparation must it be applied?

Within 8 hours of surface preparation, to avoid flash rust and contamination.

Is the primer flammable?

Yes – it is solvent based with a flash point of 5 °C. Keep away from open flames and sparks, ensure ventilation and read the Safety Data Sheet.

Which tapes is it used with?

All YTM PE/butyl tape coating systems. The YTM Primerless Anti-Corrosion Tape does not require primer.
