2-Ply Tape Coating System AWWA C214
A cold applied polyethylene / butyl tape system – inner corrosion protection tape plus outer mechanical protection tape – that meets AWWA C209 and AWWA C214.
What is the 2-Ply Tape Coating System AWWA C214?
The YTM Makina 2-Ply Tape Coating System AWWA C214 consists of YTM Primer, a black 0,50 mm corrosion protection (inner) tape and a white 0,80 mm mechanical protection (outer) tape, both with a co-extruded polyethylene backing and butyl rubber adhesive.
Designed for site or mill application on new lines and for reconditioning existing steel pipes, it protects buried and submarine pipes against corrosion. Its polymeric composition and cold application give a higher quality level than bituminous systems and meet AWWA C209-06 and AWWA C214-14.
Key features and benefits
- Meets AWWA C209-06 and AWWA C214-14
- Co-extruded backing – excellent adhesive bond
- Good adherence to primed steel
- High mechanical resistance of the thicker outer tape
- Resistant to cathodic disbondment (6,8 mm)
- UV resistant · cold applied
Applications
- Buried steel pipelines (new construction)
- Submarine and submerged pipelines
- Field joints and girth welds
- Reconditioning / rehabilitation of existing metallic pipes
- Site or mill application – by hand or with a wrapping machine
Industries served
- Water transmission and distribution
- Oil and gas pipelines
- Industrial and process plants
- Municipal infrastructure and utilities
Why choose a cold applied tape system?
- No open flame, torch or heating equipment on site – safer around live lines and in confined trenches.
- Simple tools: primer brush, knife and an optional manual wrapping machine.
- No curing time for the tapes – the joint can be inspected and lowered in as soon as wrapping is complete.
- Polymeric PE/butyl tapes give a higher quality level than bituminous coatings.
- Same system for field joints, fittings, bends and full-length pipe coating.
Inspection and quality control
- Check that the overlap is uniform and that there are no wrinkles, air pockets or lifted edges.
- Holiday-test the finished coating with a holiday (spark) detector at the test voltage required by the project specification.
- Repair any defect by cleaning, priming and over-wrapping the area with a patch of tape.
- The system is resistant to cathodic disbondment and can be used together with cathodic protection.
Storage and handling
- Store cartons dry and covered, away from direct sunlight and heat sources; keep rolls in their cartons until use.
- Keep primer cans tightly closed and away from ignition sources (see the YTM Primer data sheet).
- In cold weather keep tapes in a warm place before use for easier unrolling and better conformability.

Surface preparation
- Surfaces must be dry and free from dirt; solvent-wipe with a clean cloth to remove grease.
- Power wire-brush to remove scale, loose rust and flaking coatings to St 2 (ISO 8501-1); for refurbishment of old pipe, abrasive blast cleaning to Sa 2½ is preferred.
How to apply
- Prepare the surfaceClean, dry and wire-brush (St 2) or blast-clean (Sa 2½) the steel to ISO 8501-1.
- PrimeApply a thin coat of YTM Primer by brush or roller over the whole area to be wrapped and let it become tacky.
- Wrap the inner tapeStart at the 9 o'clock position, peel back the interleaving and wrap spirally with 2–5 % tension and 55 % overlap (double layer).
- Wrap the outer tapeUse the same width, start and finish 25 mm beyond the inner tape on primed pipe, compound side down, with 25 mm (3-layer) or 55 % (4-layer) overlap.

Frequently asked questions
Does the system meet AWWA C214?
Yes – it meets the requirements of AWWA C209-06 and AWWA C214-14.
Is a primer required?
Yes. The system is applied over YTM Primer, a liquid butyl rubber adhesive that bonds the inner tape to the steel. Apply the tape while the primer is still tacky.
Can the tapes be applied by machine?
Yes. The system can be applied by hand or with the YTM Manual Tape Wrapping Machine, which keeps constant tension and a uniform overlap.
Which existing coatings is it compatible with?
The tapes are compatible with PE, PP, PU, FBE and coal-tar (CTE) coatings, so field joints can overlap the factory coating.
How is the finished coating inspected?
Visually for uniform overlap and no wrinkles, then with a holiday (spark) detector at the voltage required by the project specification.
Is the system compatible with cathodic protection?
Yes. The tapes are resistant to cathodic disbondment and are used on cathodically protected pipelines.
