Cold Applied Mechanical Protection
A sunlight-curing fibre glass reinforced polyester wrap that shields pipeline coatings from abrasion, impact and gouging during horizontal directional drilling and in rocky backfill.
What is the Cold Applied Mechanical Protection?
YTM Makina Cold Applied Mechanical Protection is a two-element system – a fibre glass reinforced polyester laminate and an adhesive tape – designed to protect the main anti-corrosion coating of buried and above-ground steel pipes.
It is applied cold over the factory coating, on site or in the mill, for new construction or for reconditioning existing pipes. Sunlight cures the polyester and within a few hours the wrap reaches extreme hardness (60 Barcol), ready for pull-in through an HDD bore.
Key features and benefits
- Guaranteed mechanical protection of the main coating
- Cold applied – no heating, flame or mixing on site
- Cures by sunlight (UV) to extreme hardness within hours
- Ideal for horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and bores
- Compatible with PE, PP, PU, FBE and CTE coatings
- Long-lasting, economical and environmentally friendly
Applications
- Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) crossings
- Thrust / slick bores and pull-through installations
- Road, rail and river crossings
- Soil-to-air transitions
- Bends, tees and field joints
- Rocky backfill and pipeline rehabilitation
Industries served
- Oil and gas pipelines
- Water transmission pipelines
- Trenchless / HDD contractors
Inspection and storage
- Before pull-in, check that overlaps are closed and the laminate is fully hard (60 Barcol).
- Holiday-test the main coating before applying the mechanical protection.
- Store rolls in their original light-proof packaging away from sunlight and UV sources.

How to apply
- PrepareMake sure the main coating is cured, intact, clean and dry; lightly abrade glossy surfaces.
- CutCut the laminate to the pipe circumference plus a minimum 50 mm overlap; keep cut pieces covered from light.
- Wrap & secureWrap tightly over the main coating and fix overlaps and ends with the system adhesive tape.
- Sun cureExpose to sunlight; the laminate reaches extreme hardness within a few hours – then inspect before pull-in.

Frequently asked questions
What is cold applied mechanical protection used for?
It protects the anti-corrosion coating of steel pipes against abrasion, impact and gouging – especially during HDD pull-back and in rocky soil.
How does the wrap cure?
The fibre glass reinforced polyester cures with sunlight (UV). No heat, flame or two-component mixing is required.
What is the minimum application temperature?
Apply above 5 °C. The maximum service temperature of the cured wrap is 100 °C.
How should rolls be stored?
Keep rolls in their original packaging, away from direct sunlight and any UV source, and re-cover cut rolls immediately, as light starts the curing process.
Does the wrap replace the anti-corrosion coating?
No. It is a mechanical protection applied over the pipe's main corrosion coating (PE, PP, PU, FBE or CTE).
Is it suitable for above-ground pipes?
Yes – the system is designed for buried and above-ground pipes, including soil-to-air transitions.
